So you've been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Maybe you saw it on a UFC broadcast, maybe a friend recommended it, or maybe you just Googled 'BJJ near me' and found us. Whatever brought you here — welcome. Here's exactly what to expect when you walk through the door at Good Jiu Jiu in Moorabbin.

You Don't Need to Be Fit First

This is the number one thing that holds people back, and it's completely backwards. BJJ will get you fit — you don't need to be fit to start BJJ. We get students of every shape, size, age, and fitness level. Your first class is about learning, not performing. Nobody expects you to keep up with people who've been training for years.

What the Class Actually Looks Like

Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)

We start with a general warm-up — some movement drills, shrimping (a BJJ-specific movement), and light stretching. It might feel unfamiliar at first, but these movements become second nature quickly.

Technique (20–30 minutes)

Coach Nelson will demonstrate a technique or sequence — often a guard pass, sweep, or submission. You'll then drill it with a partner at a slow, controlled pace. This is where most of your learning happens. Ask as many questions as you like.

Sparring / Rolling (20–30 minutes)

As a first-timer, you won't be thrown into sparring right away. You'll watch, or you may do some very light positional work with an experienced training partner who will guide you. Nobody at Good Jiu Jiu is here to prove anything at your expense.

What to Wear

  • For your first class: comfortable workout clothes — shorts and a rash guard or a fitted t-shirt work fine.

  • No shoes on the mats. Thongs or slides to walk to and from the mat, then bare feet.

  • Remove all jewellery before class.

  • If you decide to join, you'll need a gi (the traditional jacket and pants) — we can point you toward the right one.

The Vibe at Good Jiu Jiu

We have a strict no-ego policy. Beginners are valued here because they're the future of the club. The people you train with tonight may become some of your closest training partners over the next few years. Everyone remembers being new.

Ready to Try It?

Your first class is completely free. No obligation, no hard sell at the end. Just show up at 34A Bignell Road, Moorabbin and see what it's about. If you love it, great. If you need more time to think, that's fine too.

Book your free trial class or call Nelson on 0432 691 445 to find the best time to come in.
